life and times . . . . a waverider's perspective

AND ALL WILL FLOW . . . .

Hi!

I was searching my wife’s iPOD last night looking for something she wanted to listen to, and I ran across an old song that had made its way into her little gizmo from my computer, by a band named Honk, from the soundtrack of one of the first really cool surf/sport films ever made called 5 Summer Stories (now a classic).  The song had been on a custom CD I made years ago that I’d put on my computer as well (a sundry collection of mellow music), before I’d lost that soundtrack CD by Honk, which I’d either received as a gift from somebody who knew me well, or I bought on a recommendation from the same friend, I can’t recall.  I believe I saw that movie once in the Sunset District of San Francisco, near the famous heavy-duty Ocean Beach surf spot (where Kelly Slater just cinched his 11th world championship title last month), during a few crazy years when my old high school surf buddy and I got a little bit ‘involved’ with the local OB surf crew (him much more than me, OK) and I was often less than ‘fully clear’ during my severely unrestrained descents into that wild underbelly-of-society subculture.  My memory is, therefore, a little ‘spotty’ . . .

Anyway, I LOVE that soundtrack!  And, at the time I got the CD in the early 90’s, various verses of the main theme song instantly became my personal mantra and motto.  20 years later, it seems that these lyrics have once again become amazingly appropriate for me, my life, my attitude, my activities, etc., etc.  Those of you who knew me then, and know my personal history, will totally understand where I’m coming from (I hope).  Here is an excerpt:

I’ve been staying high in the middle

Of an honest to goodness hey-diddle-diddle

I traded my Porsche for a cow and fiddle, too . . .

My train of thought reached an intersection

Got switched on to a new direction

Now I’m here to spread the infection to you

Laaaay down your woes . . . .

Oooopen what’s closed . . . .

And aaaall will flow . . . . .

IF you let it gooooo-OOOOO-OOOOOOOO!

Wow.  Those lyrics, remembered by rote from many years ago, still give me chills.  Notice how cleanly they merge with the main theme of this blog, and my life in general.  Here are two more lines that are even more germane to my ‘unconventional’ perspective on things:

. . . . Fenced by fears of what we’re told is wrong

Well I found a hole in the fence!

And I jumped right through

Now I’m saying that you can too-OOOOO!

‘OK, dude, we get it already!’  Cool.  Carry on then . . . . . . and, when circumstances present themselves that appear to have no easy solution, try looking around for that ‘hole in the fence’ that I jumped through 20-odd years ago.  It’s there.  And it’s calling to you in the eternal ripeness of this now moment . . . .

  1. I love Honk. I first heard them in So Cal many years ago. I have all 4 albums (now CDs) They have a new live CD, ‘Honk, Coach House Live’. If you don’t have it you will want to get it!

    • Are they awesome or what? I no longer have their music, only part of that one song. My laptop, crashed years ago with the mp3s, and I lost the CD I had of Five Summer Stories. I live in Central America now, and I never found their stuff before the music industry shut down the free downloading sites. Do you know a site I could download some of their songs and pay with PayPal? Any help getting their music, especially that album I lost, would be greatly appreciated!
